The only record of his death is a note by Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus in 945. Rurik’s father had ruled Kievan Rus for several years before he died in 945 and left his kingdom to Rurik.

Rurik then took over as a prince and began consolidating the various tribes under his rule by conquering new lands and integrating them into his territory.
